Dragon Quest IX ships 5.3 million, becomes series best-seller

Square Enix put out a rather strange announcement yesterday, announcing that Dragon Quest IX has shipped 5.3 million units worldwide as of the end of 2010.

That's a strange number to announce - not rounded, not a major milestone - but it does represent the fact that Dragon Quest IX is now the best selling entry in the series, and the first Dragon Quest game to ever top 5 million units.

Dragon Quest is always a series that has kind of eluded me. Being based in the UK, I never got to experience the series back when it was on the 8 or 16 bit consoles, and then the PS2 releases passed me by as I picked up titles like Disgaea and Persona instead.

We're continuing to plough away on our E3 2010 Media Catch-Up - and this time we're looking at the media for the Square Enix developed and Nintendo Published Dragon Quest IX, starting off with the screenshots of the game released at the show.

Nintendo have released a new batch of English language screenshots and some new artwork for Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, which they're publishing for Square Enix in the West.

The DS title has sold almost 5 million copies in Japan since launch, and Squar Enix are hoping a publishing partnership with Nintendo will help the Dragon Quest series attain the same success in the West.

Nintendo and Square Enix have announced that Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is to arrive in Europe and North America this July.

North America will get their hands on the game on July 12th - exactly a year and one day from the original 2009 Japanese launch - while Europeans will be able to play the latest in the classic RPG series on July 23rd.
